Have you ever come across a issue where you either have a corrupt copy of VMware tools that can’t be updated or the update fails part way through leaving stale traces.
Error 1316. A network error occurred while attempting to read from the file C:\Windows\Installer\VMware Tools.msi
A previous version of VMware Tools is already installed. Setup will uninstall the previous version before proceeding with this installation.
*** Normal procedure would be to try using the windows uninstaller and we observe it keeps failing. From here on we are to proceed with the manual removal of the remnants from Windows registry that is stopping the update. The below steps suggested are in accordance with VMware forums. ***
* Click Start > Run and type “regedit” press Enter. Invokes registry editor.
Take a FULL BACKUP of the registry prior to editing it.
Delete these registry keys if they exist:
Finally, Ensure the folder located in %ProgramFiles%VMwareVMware Tools is deleted.
* Now attempt to install the latest version of VMware tools.
